Abstract

This paper presents research pertaining to the design and development of an original concept for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UA V) with vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities. Such an aircraft would possess the capability to takeoff vertically, hover, and transition to conventional horizontal flight. A survey was made to identify VTOL concepts already implemented in existing UA V designs, as well as to identify unutilized VTOL aircraft configurations that could be incorporated into a new UA V design. An aircraft configuration featuring three titling ducted propellers was selected for detailed consideration. Power requirements and propulsion system sizing for a ducted propeller configuration were analyzed; aircraft stability and control in hover was also studied. This research culminated in the development of a conceptual design for a small-scale VTOL UAV powered by a system of tilting ducted propellers. A description of the proposed conceptual design is presented.
