Abstract
Geotechnical Engineering is a branch of Civil Engineering that deals with soil, rock, ground water and their relationship with the design, construction, and operation of engineering projects (Coduto, 1998). As early as the Middle Ages builders found out through trial and error that the soils stratums underneath their structures had to be competent enough to withstand the stresses induced by these structures. The trial-and-error method continued through the Renaissance and into the Industrial Revolution. (Coduto, 1998) The trial-and-error method turned out to be a very tedious and expensive way of learning.
