Abstract
This Bureau of Mines hydrominer, powered by 3000-psi oilhydraulics, cuts coal with 10,000-psi water jets. The hydrominer, was designed to be used in longwall coal mining and is an improvement over the conventional machine in that it reduces coal dust and the water jets cannot produce sparks. The article outlines the design of the basic components i.e. the oscillating spray arms, spray arm component selection, high pressure water system component selection and the pumps.
