Turning Resistance of Large Conveyor Idlers Lubricated with Dupont's Krytox
Abstract
Numerous underground and surface mine fires are known to originate from sized conveyor rollers and idlers. the conveyor associated risk of fire can be greatly reduced if a nonflammable lubricant is used to lubricate roller bearings. a family of nonflammable, general purpose lubricants, suitable for mine conveyor applications, was recently introduced by DuPont under the trade name of KRYTOX. Its suitability for use in mine conveyor applications is now being tested. the paper describes the program of investigations undertaken at the University of Alberta to define the the values of turning resistance for KRYTOX lubricated rollers as dependent on temperature, idler load, and its speed.
