Abstract
In this paper the development of an expert system for preliminary design and finite element modelling of 4-bar mechanisms is discussed. The expert system accepts the dimensions of a specified mechanism and determines feasibility, flexibility, and satisfaction of design constraints. The system also makes a determination of whether a detailed finite element analysis is necessary and if it is, determines mesh, time step and other parameters for a finite element analysis of the mechanism. Subsequently it activates a finite element analysis program. The system thus serves as an intelligent interface for the finite element analysis package, and, if coupled with kinematic synthesis and optimal design packages can serve as an integrated mechanism design system.
