Abstract
"Modal Analysis methodologies are being investigated as a means to model power system behavior, in recent times. A number of approaches, borrowing from the classical System Identification methods have been investigated in the past. The requirement is for determining low-order linearized models of power systems, for which identification of the modal parameters of the system becomes necessary.
This work compares and contrasts three modal extraction methods, namely the Prony method, the Levenberg-Marquardt method, and the Hilbert Transform method. Among these, the Prony has been a topic of research for some time, as also the Levenberg-Marquardt method which is based on the least squares technique. The application of the Hilbert Transform method to power system analysis on the other hand is a recent development.
The eigenvalues and residues of the reduced order models of large non-linear systems are determined from the system dynamic response for each of the three methods. The Levenberg-Marquardt method was found to be the most accurate. The Prony and the Hilbert Transform methods yielded fairly accurate results depending on the selection of natural frequencies and an accurate estimation of the number of modes in the system."--Abstract, page iii.
