Abstract
"Warranty coverage is provided by the manufacturers for their products for many reasons: to ascertain that the product will perform for a given time, as a mark of product eminence and consistency, government regulation and future accountability. Warranty cost covers basic expenditure for fixing the product in the purchase price. The warranty coverage has been expressed by the manufacturer based on the life of the product.
Prediction of the warranty cost is the actual estimation of the cost that could incur for replacing/repairing the part/component which hampers the performance of the product. Correct estimation of warranty cost takes away the unnecessary money held over a particular issue (warranty) which a company can use it to develop its product or process for a better quality to satisfy the customer.
This thesis mainly concentrates on the formulation of the warranty problem in particular with that of automobile industries. This thesis is an integration of Mahalonobis Distance and Dr. Ragsdell's Warranty Cost Model. ·Mahalonobis Distance (MD) is the single measurement of different quality characteristics of a population by considering the correlations between them. Dr. Ragsdell's Warranty Cost Model gives the estimation about loss incurred based on the performance of products using single quality characteristics. This thesis replaces the single quality characteristic with Mahalonobis Distance which is the single representation of multiple interrelated quality characteristics"--Abstract, page iii.
