The Use of Media Objects in e-Learning: A Genre Analysis of Eight Online Boating Education Websites

Abstract

The purpose of the analysis is to understand the usage of different media objects for e-learning and potential management schemes of the media objects in e-learning systems. The investigators surveyed eight online boating education courses between December 10, 2008 and March 4, 2009. Five media genres emerged from the process of the analysis based on the principle of exclusivity among categories and overall exhaustivity. The genre analysis illustrates the typologies of the eight online boating education Web sites regarding the types of media objects. The media genres have a direct relationship with instructional design and the impact on achieving comprehension of a specific topic. In addition, the appropriate chunking of content into units affects the content management of the Web sites as instructional designers must use media objects effectively to present learning concepts.
