The Business Environment of Arab Gulf State Organizations
Abstract
The Dubai Ports World fiasco provides a vivid example of the poor decisions that can be made when stakeholders in the United States deal with unfamiliar cultures. the author was sponsored by a Fulbright Scholars Grant in 2005 to live and teach in a university in Oman, where he gained insights into organizations in the Gulf States. the article describes the author's experiences in Oman and Dubai and provides a platform to identify some of the major misconceptions and develop reasonable expectations regarding the operations of organizations from the Gulf States. the paper deals with expectations of how to deal with firms from the Gulf States, such as Dubai Ports World, and concludes with extrapolations of what might lie ahead for firms in these countries as the petroleum production begins to become depleted.
