Attribute Substitution in Systems Engineering
Abstract
Much has been written about human cognitive biases in decision making. One of the pioneers in this field, Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman, now sees many cognitive biases as abstractly belonging to one higher-level bias, that of attribute substitution. Attribute substitution occurs when an answer about a target attribute is provided by referring to a simpler or more easily accessible heuristic attribute. the essence of this biasing process can be generalized and applied at all levels of systems engineering in order to ensure that systems are being built according to market needs.
