Abstract:
This research examines faculty evaluation processes and the impact of working with a department to improve fairness and equity in these assessments. Bias in faculty evaluations can significantly influence resource distribution, career advancement, and overall workplace equity. This project explores the implementation of behavior- and outcome-based rubrics as a structured approach to mitigating bias in a department. Through literature review, a workshop, and interviews, weaknesses in the current evaluation system were identified, and a pilot case study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of rubric-based evaluations. Thematic coding identified a number of concerns with current evaluation processes and cautious optimism for the rubric approach. The findings provide a model for future departmental adoption, promoting best practices in faculty assessment. By standardizing evaluation criteria and ensuring transparency, this study aims to enhance the validity and equity of faculty performance reviews, ultimately contributing to more just and effective academic personnel decisions.
