Abstract
"The design and construction of highway bridges is a subject so broad and includes so many different specialized branches of engineering that volumes would be required to discuss the matter in any detail. With this in mind, the writer will attempt to cover in the following paper only a brief outline of the different phases of the work and to show how a number of the special problems are handled by the Bureau of Bridges of the Missouri State Highway Department. The writer, having had seven years experience as detailer, designer, engineer of construction assignments, and chief draftsman with this Bureau, is thoroughly familiar with the workings of the organization; and he feels that the information brought out in the following discussion will be of interest and value especially to students preparing themselves for engineering work"--Introduction, page 1.
