New Method For Steelmaking Slag Foaming Study Including Machine Vision Technique And Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope

Abstract

Experimental studies of steelmaking slag are challenging due to high reactivity of the high FeO liquid sample. A new method for evaluation of slag foaming is proposed. Liquid synthetic EAF slag sample is subjected to in-situ contact with selected carbon bearing particles laying on the platinum substrate in the Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. Bubble formation occurred while rapidly heating (150°C/min) in the argon atmosphere at the max temperature of 1600°C. Machine learning is applied to analyzing the bubbles formation. Data on the bubbles formation rate and bubble sizes is obtained and compared to the carbon source. Key advantages of the method - fast and simple experiments for evaluating FeO-C reactions and foaming.
