Abstract
This project intends to build a learning device which is manipulative based on the Spring Analogy that is used to establish the concept of consolidation. This hands-on tool will be used to model the process of soil consolidation. It will be in this manner that the students wiII be able to see how this transfer of stresses occurs instantaneously and with respect to time. Explaining the process of consolidation often takes more than one week of lecturing and only after working some examples is the concept really learned. Addressing this challenge by developing the device will streamline the introduction of the concept of consolidation. As an educational hands-on tool, the impacts are linked with the grades of the students. Therefore, tests and quizzes will be collected for data to measure students understanding and evaluate the impact of the device. The goal of this project is to increase retention and foundational understanding of Soil Consolidation through the implementation of this device in portions of the lecture and the lab components of the course.
