Abstract

Laboratory experiments have been conducted on a 1 L carbon bed canister in order to measure the performance of the canister in containing automotive fuel vapors that would otherwise escape from the fuel tank. The investigation simulates gasoline fuel vapor using iso-octane vapor carried in helium gas. Tests were conducted at two different concentrations of the hydrocarbon. The results indicate that the performance of the canister is improved for higher inlet concentrations. For the lower concentration there is a significant point where the performance of the canister degrades rapidly, however this point is not as clear for the higher concentration. While this study provides a qualitative measurement of the performance of the carbon canister, improvement can be made to the experimental technique to quantify the results.
