Water Jets Offer Precise Cutting
Abstract
The development and application of high pressure water jet cutting of rock for underground excavation are discussed. The potential of this technique for hydropower applications is stressed. Two recent case studies are presented which illustrate the benefits of water jet cutting. These are excavation of 2000m³ of dolomite, chert and clay to complete and extend an underground museum at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St Louis, USA, and construction of a carved, decorative granite arch.
