Ground Control for Highwall Mining
Abstract
Proper ground control engineering is of great importance in safe highwall minning operations as the hillseams formed by these operations affects the stability of highwalls. There are some measures that can be taken to reduce the risk associated with hillseams such as planning, which includes charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall, and decreasing the highwall slope angle. The two things which are necessary in control operations are, there should be substantial retrieval effort such as underground recovery, surface excavation, and design of proper pillar is also essential to maintain highwall stability and to prevent entrapments. Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure.
