Deformation Prediction of Underground Excavations at WIPP using Backpropagation

Abstract

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is an underground nuclear waste repository located 650 m below surface in bedded salt in New Mexico. Accurate prediction of excavation deformation is essential but difficult to achieve due to the complex time-dependent properties of the rock salt by using a computer simulation. Backpropagation was therefore applied to predict ground movements at WIPP.
