Automatic Tolerance Assignment using Fuzzy Logic
Abstract
Tolerance design is interdisciplinary in nature and requiresinput from various stages of product development such as design, manufacturing, and assembly. The factors involved, such asequipment and labor costs, process information, and required rate ofsuccessful assembly, are highly uncertain, especially in the earlydesign stage. This paper presents a fuzzy logic approach to modelall uncertain parameters in the process for automatic optimaltolerance assignment. A method based on fuzzy logic to evaluateassembly rate is proposed, and the comparison between the fuzzylogic approach and the statistical method is discussed. It is foundthat using fuzzy logic, a relatively smaller sample size is needed toestimate the assembly rate with reasonable accuracy. Two casesstudies are used to demonstrate the process of integrating cost, manufacturing processes, and assembly rates and their uncertaintiesusing fuzzy logic.
