Characteristics of a Novel Awning Fabric

Abstract

In recent years innovative awnings and window coverings have been marketed with claims that they will enhance passive solar energy or energy conservation characteristics of a building. This article describes the results of experimentation to determine characteristics of solar energy gain, visibility and air permeability of an innovative awning fabric. The use of this fabric could result in the reduction of the thermal load on a building air conditioning system by allowing the trapped heat to escape through and be deflected by the fabric. This fabric also allows the viewing of exterior scenery through the fabric with the assurance that the solar load is greatly reduced.
