Failure Analysis of Unidirectional Ceramic Matrix Composites under Flexure
Abstract
In the present paper, an analytical model has been developed for the characterization of a unidirectional ceramic matrix composite under flexural loading with single and multiple matrix cracks on the tensile side. First, the stress intensity factor solutions for the single and multiple crack configurations are presented following the method of superposition. Then, the true compressive stresses on the compression side of the beam, the stresses in the intact fibers bridging the matrix crack and the shear stress at the matrix crack tip are determined. Finally, the modes of failure are investigated using an appropriate failure criterion.
