Electrical Breakdown Strength of Alumina Single Crystal and Ceramics
Abstract
Electrical breakdown strength (BDS) of alumina (Al2O3) single crystal and polycrystalline ceramics was measured to study the electrical breakdown mechanisms of these materials. Samples with dimpled electrode geometry were prepared in order to overcome the electrical field enhancement at the electrode edges. The effects of temperature, sample thickness and electrode materials on the BDS were studied towards understanding possible breakdown mechanisms.
