Characterization of Zirconium Diboride-molybdenum Disilicide Ceramics
Abstract
The microstructure and properties of zirconium diboride-molybdenum disilicide ceramics were studied. Up to thirty volume percent molybdenum disilicide was incorporated into zirconium diboride. The density, microstructure, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance were characterized as a function of composition. Molybdenum disilicide was investigated as an additive to zirconium diboride due to its ability to form a protective oxide layer that might impart improved oxidation resistance to the ceramic. The results were compared to a previous examination of zirconium diboride-silicon carbide ceramics.
