Templated Reaction-Joining of Single-Domain YBCO Superconductors
Abstract
The present work investigates a method whereby melt-textured YBCO singledomains are reaction-joined by melting a sintered ErBa2Cii3O7-s wafer between them. Single-domain samples are joined such that their crystallographic axes are aligned. During slow cooling, the YBCO mating surfaces act as templates for epitaxial growth of the superconducting matrix phase through the wafer. Microstructural evaluation of the joined regions show that the Er123 wafer reacted with the YBCO mating surfaces and crystallized with a platellar morphology similar to the original melt-textured samples.
