Microstructural Characterization of a FSW 7050 Al Alloy
Abstract
Microstructure of a thick plate FSW 7050 Al was characterized to address the issues of strength and ductility variations. the variations of microstructure at various locations of the FSW nugget in as-FSW and after heat treatment conditions are presented. the post FSW solution treatment and aging leads to recovery of strength, but results in undesirable reductions in ductility. the variation of strength and ductility is linked with microstructural changes that occur during heat treatment. Particular regions of the FSW nugget region exhibit abnormal grain growth. the origin of abnormal grain growth is discussed.
