Effect of Y 2BaCuO 5 Morphology and Size in Semisolid Melt on Growth Rate of YBa 2Cu 3O 7-X Single Crystals
Abstract
To control the growth rate of melt textured YBa 2Cu 3O 7-x (Y123) single crystals, the effects of starting powder composition and heating rate of the compacts on the morphology and size of Y 2BaCuO 5 (Y211) in semisolid melt were studied. the processing route of the samples involved the mixture of Y 2O 3 and liquid phase composition (barium cuprate and copper oxide) as starting compounds. the correlations between the heating rate, the morphology of Y211, and the growth rate of Y123 ware examined. Observations from crystal size and microstructural analysis revealed that lower heating rate of compacts led to formation of needle shaped Y211 particles, which consequently resulted in faster growth rate of melt textured Y123 single crystal.
