Positron Annihilation Studies of Order-Disorder in Cd3Mg

Abstract

Measurements of the S parameter for positron annihilation in well-annealed Cd3Mg have been made as a function of temperature during ramp heating and cooling. The ramp cooling results indicate that excess vacancies affect the ordering process. On ramp heating the structure of the S-parameter vs. temperature curve is very dependent on the heating rate. Stabilized zirconia crucibles were used to form the alloys used in the present experiments to eliminate the effects of interference from second-phase particles which were most likely present in earlier measurements.
