Densification and Fracture Toughness Enhancement of Pressureless Sintered Aluminum Oxide-titanium Diboride Composites
Abstract
Additions of TiB2 particulate inclusions have previously been shown to enhance the fracture toughness of hot-pressed Al2O3 matrices. in the present investigation, the use of pressureless sintering has been found to impart a comparable toughening effect on Al2O3-TiB2 composites. Furthermore, various toughening effects relating to particle shape and size, as well as inclusion content, are observed.
