Masters Theses

Abstract

"In this thesis the design of the major components of a medium pressure hydraulic coal mining machine is presented. The machine is to produce water jets operating at a continuous pressure of 10,000 psi with a total flow rate of 47.8 gpm. This machine is being used to mine coal from an underground longwall coal face, with an expected output of 7 tons per minute.

The primary elements of the hydraulic coal mining machine are the power source, the pump, the cutting head, and the secondary plow supporting structures. The power source will be a British Jefferey-Diamond (BJD) Supermatic electric motor and haulage unit with a modified BJD-B56 underframe. The pressure source will be two Kobe-Size 4J, 10,000 psi Horizontal Triplex Pumps, each with a maximum pressure of 10,000 psi and flow rate of 23.9 gpm. The supporting structure consists of structural steel components designed to withstand the static weight of the pumps, cutting head and secondary plow. Normal operational loads incurred during mining operation were also considered.

The hydraulic coal mining machine power unit system will have a total length of approximately 19 feet-6 inches, depending on the size of two gearboxes, whose dimensions were unknown at the time of this writing. The gearboxes are being designed by BJD. The approximate total cost of the medium pressure hydraulic coal mining machine is $137,900. This price will vary depending on the price of steel at the time of construction. The approximate weight of the machine power unit system is 42,353 pounds"-- Abstract, pp. ii-iii
