Abstract
"It is important for metallurgists to control the properties of their metals. Such properties like strength and hardness are vital for determining the becoming of the metal. It is known that aging gray and ductile cast iron at room temperature can alter strength and hardness. Controlling the aging process would be a great advantage for metal casters; they could optimize the strength or the yield of their castings. This research tries to provide a model for the aging of gray and ductile cast irons and analyzes a case study of carbides in ductile iron. It not only analyzes the evolution of strength and hardness due to aging, but it also shows the impact of aging on machinability.
Previous research done by Dr. Yon Richards and Wayne Nicola proved the effectiveness of aging the iron at room temperature, since almost 90% of the irons studied showed aging at room temperature. It was also possible to accelerate the aging by raising the temperature. A clear correlation exists between machinability and aged iron. Aging at room temperature is a very economical process, since it does not cost anything. It is a great way to improve the quality of the iron with no additional expenses. This disse1tation will try to elaborate on the mechanism of aging by studying aging in ductile irons, the effects of aging on the machinability of gray cast iron, and a case study of carbides in ductile iron.
Aging behavior of gray and ductile cast iron should be of tremendous benefits for the public. Cast irons are widely used in the industry and are encountered in everyone's day-to-day life. More and more ductile iron replaces steel for high strength components. It has become an economical choice for high performance complex ferrous parts. Ductile iron being fairly recent (1948), a lot of research remains to be done in that field"--Abstract, page iv.
