Abstract
"Application of the 3-D wavelet transforms on the measured ultrasonic data has been a novel application for the damage detection analysis of the two-dimensional structural systems. Most of the researchers, till date have been concentrating on the regeneration of the measured data by constructing mathematical models and by generating stiffness matrices in order to detect damage on the given two-dimensional structure. Measured 3-D ultrasonic data can be used to detect the location of the damage with high accuracy. The proposed three-dimensional wavelet technique for damage detection in structural systems utilizes measured 3-D ultrasonic data obtained from the damaged structural systems. After the ultrasonic residual data is collected, wavelet denoising shrinkage is performed in order to reduce noise present in it. In order to perform wavelet de-noising, a 3-D wavelet transform was developed. By performing wavelet decomposition on the residual ultrasonic 3-D data and by taking only detail coefficients, wavelet de-noising is performed to minimize the noise content present in the signal. After noise removal, each of the individual slices of the 3-D data is obtained and segmentation is performed on each of them with minimum homogeneity and uncertainty (MHUE) based thresholding. It is shown that the proposed method can clearly locate single as well as multiple damaged locations in the structural systems. The damage location method is very robust and independent of the type of damage or the structural material. The proposed technique is applied to detect damaged locations on the experimental plates, which have been inflicted with artificial damages. The results obtained are satisfactory."--Abstract, page iii.
