Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP)
Abstract
"The Laser Aided Manufacturing Processes (LAMP) developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla is used to fabricate three-dimensional metal and ceramic parts. The part material is supplied in the form of powder and the laser is used to melt the powder onto a substrate. The CAD model is basically converted to a format called STL files where the model is split into numerous triangles. This facilitates the slicing of the CAD model. Toolpath generation software is used to generate the deposition toolpath from the STL file. The laser scans the substrate and deposits the part according to the slices and slowly finishes the part to near net shape. This thesis describes the optimization methods used in the process to obtain a combination(s) of parameters that provide an ideal result(s), namely the part quality. The build efficiency of the process is also taken into consideration. These issues are outlined as follows:
a) Application of a Diagnostic Tool: A Design of Experiments (DOE) optimization is used in the laser deposition process to obtain ideal parameter combinations that give maximum build rate, hardness and minimum porosity.
b) Design of Experiments Optimization of the LAMP: An in-depth analysis of the process is conducted in this DOE approach wherein; a microstructural analysis of the process is carried out in addition to the previous criteria used above. The optimal level combinations are found for the comprehensive evaluation criteria and hence making the process more robust"--Abstract, page iv.
