Abstract
"In this study, impact of cutting tool life and tool slot size on tool management in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) is investigated. A conceptual tool management framework, which has been proposed by Buyurgan, Saygin, and Kilic (2003), is modified and implemented in a simulation environment in order to assess its performance. This model, namely LS Model (LS stands for Life and Size), makes decisions by considering both tool life and tool slot size. An alternative tool management model that makes decisions based only on tool life, namely LO Model (LO stands for Life Only), is developed in order to make a comparative analysis. Operation-Tool-Machine compatibility data are adapted from Sarin and Chen (1987) and used for generating different production scenarios in order to conduct an in-depth simulation study.
The software platform includes ARENA™ 8.0 simulation package and Microsoft Visual Basic™. A hypothetical FMS model is simulated under different part routings and tool data sets. The performances of the LS and LO Models are compared based on four performance measures: total production cost, throughput, machine utilization, and number of products. The simulation results indicate that the performance of the LS Model improves as the number of alternative tools increase. No statistically significant difference is found between the performances of LS and LO models when the number of tool alternatives is small. Based on the Operation-Tool-Machine compatibility data used in the analysis, the study shows that tool life and tool slot size are critical factors when certain tools can be used for a variety of operations (i.e. tool alternatives), thus, both factors need to be taken into account for tool selection, allocation, and removal decisions"-- Abstract, p. iii
