Abstract

"The effects of altering particle characteristics via addition of groups to the activated sites of porous silica on its pore size distribution were studied. For this study, three types of porous silica particles- (i) native silica, (ii) silanized silica, and (iii) C-18 silanized silica-were characterized using gas sorption. The native and silanized porous silica samples were composed of mono-dispersed spheres with particle diameters of less than 3.5 µm. The C-18 silanized silica sample was also monodispersed with a particle diameter of less than 1.8 µm.

The samples were analyzed using nitrogen sorption and mercury porosimetry with an Autosorb 1-C® gas sorption apparatus and Poremaster® mercury porosimeter, developed by Quantachrome Corporation at Boynton Beach, Florida. Each instrument used a data acquisition/analysis computer software (Autosorb 1 for Windows (version 1.19) for the Autosorb 1-C® and Poremaster for Windows (version 1. 07) for the Poremaster®, respectively) developed by Quantachrome Corp. This setup was used to generate BJH pore size distributions and perform a micropore analysis using the Saito-Faley method for the gas sorption data as well as a porosimetry analysis.

The experimental results indicated that addition of groups to the activated sites of porous silica alters the pore size distributions of the particles. It was found that as the size of the attached groups increased, the pore size distribution tended to shift towards smaller pore diameters. Noticeable differences were observed between the pore size distributions derived from the adsorption and desorption branches of the isotherm, thus indicating that both these processes occur via different mechanisms"--Abstract, page iii.
