Manufacturing Design Advisory System for Machined Components

Abstract

Early identification of manufacturing constraints during product design will lead to significant reduction in product developmental time and costs. This paper discusses the architecture of an integrated design and manufacturing (IDM) system for evaluation of machined components. The IDM system consists of three modules: design module, interface module and evaluation module. The design module comprises a feature library that is used by the designer to instantiate features in order to build a part model. The interface module interprets the part model information into a format that is understood by the evaluation module. The evaluation module employs spatial geometric reasoning to deduce feature attributes and feature relations that are used to identify manufacturing constraints and appropriate alternative redesign solutions. The IDM system is implemented on a SunSparc 20 workstation using the C++ language. The system employs ACIS geometric modeler and the graphical user interface (GUI) is developed by using MOTIF.
