Introduction to the Special Issue on Healthcare Systems
Abstract
Healthcare systems are complex and often consist of a broad array of individuals, resources, and technologies, as well as inter-related services and networks. From a narrow perspective, these systems simply entail the delivery of health services where the goal is to promote, restore, or maintain health. In addition, however, healthcare systems include the network of hospitals, clinics, neighborhood centers, and public health services, along with many other entities. Due to the complexity of healthcare systems, there are unique opportunities to drive improvements through the application of engineering management principles and practices to fundamentally change organizational processes and routines in order to develop strategic advantages.
