Establishing an Engineering College at Prince Sultan University
Abstract
In the fall of 2009 Prince Sultan University, a leading private university in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, formed a committee to consider establishing an Engineering College at the university. the committee was to focus on the employment needs in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region and identify at least three engineering degree programs to help meet these needs. the committee surveyed engineering programs at 29 universities in Saudi Arabia, 30 universities in the Gulf region as well as 113 additional universities worldwide. the committee then categorized these programs into four general areas: Architecture Related Programs, Technology Related Engineering Programs, Management Related Engineering Programs, and Traditional Engineering Programs. the committee next looked at the industry demand for engineering graduates and compiled a list of twelve program criteria that were important for the proposed PSU engineering programs. the committee evaluated each of the potential engineering programs and recommended that PSU initially offer three undergraduate engineering degree programs for men and three for women.
