Cost Analysis in Surface Metrology: An overview
Abstract
Surface metrology is the science of measuring surfaces of parts manufactured in industries. the parts measured are typically those used in the manufacturing world, e.g., the automobile industry and the aviation industry. in many manufacturing settings, precision of the part manufactured is an important quality criterion. as a result, a significant amount of effort is devoted to ensuring that parts produced remain within the tolerance specified. Instruments used in metrology range from gages through coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) to optical instruments. in this paper, we present an analysis of the costs incurred in metrology management, in particular in the metrology of surfaces. Our treatment is at a higher level; we present only an overview of the topic. to the best of our knowledge, very little exists in the literature on this topic.
