Evaluating Multi-characteristic Products through an Integrated Capability Index

Abstract

Process capability indices were originally invented to enable an organization to make economically sound decisions for process management. the current practice is to use Cp and Cpk regardless of the validity of the underlying assumptions necessary for their use. Even if all necessary assumptions are satisfied, important problems can be missed if these indices are the sole process evaluation examined. the Cpmk index, a capability index which integrates the Cpk and Cpm indices provides a better metric for process yield and process loss. This metric is more beneficial for organizations to balance the needs of increasing process yield and reducing process loss. the paper will focus mainly on Cpmk, and the application of the MPCAC (Multi-Process Capability Analysis Chart) to simultaneously evaluate a multi-process product. a case study is presented to illustrate the benefits of this methodology.
