Scalable Platform Formation Method
Abstract
Many companies are trying to cost-effectively offer a wide variety of product variants to customers using product platform concepts. This paper presents a heuristic based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) method to form scalable product platforms. in our proposed method, computing agents called the ants ultimately select a combination of nodes representing discrete values of various design variables to be used for product platforming purposes. the proposed method is illustrated using an example of pressure vessels product family provided by Hernandez et al [2]. Initial findings have shown promising results.
