Determination of Extent of Platforming for Scalable Products
Abstract
Creating product variants by deploying platforms is one of the popular methods used by many companies to respond to the growing trend of mass customization. in this paper, we propose a methodology to determine the extent of platforming a given set of scalable product variants. the objective function is to minimize the cost of providing variety for the given demand scenario and allowable performance loss of the individual products. the optimization is performed considering the manufacturing cost of the product for a uniform demand scenario. a family of scalable axial piston pumps is used to illustrate the proposed methodology.
