Genetic Neuro-Vision System for Autonomous Parts Assembly
Abstract
There is a need for flexible systems which are capable of producing a wide variety of products on an item-by-item basis to be able to respond quickly to changes imposed by global markets. Surface mount technology provide a means to achieve parts assembly systems that can accommodate boards that vary in size, component content, component density and layout. This necessitates completely flexible and intelligently guided component placement, verification of components before installation to prevent incorrect placement and finally on-line inspection to verify proper component orientation and positioning prior to solder reflow for minimizing rework and reject costs. This demonstrates the capabilities of emerging technologies, namely, genetic algorithms and artificial neural networks in achieving autonomous parts assembly systems that can learn.
