A Scheme for the Segmentation of Text and Image Areas in Compound Documents for Efficient Compression
Abstract
There exist documents in several applications that contain both text and images. for the compression of such documents, it is desirable (and often required) that the text data be compressed without loss, and that the image portion be compressed using a lossy scheme. This paper proposes a scheme for the recognition and segmentation of text and image regions in compound documents. This could then be used for the efficient compression of such documents by suitably applying separate compression techniques that are well suited to the text and image regions. the implementation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the scheme.
