Abstract

"The existing co-design methods of mechatronic products focus on co-design of mechanical and electronic components or co-design of computer hardware and software components. There exist no effective co-design methods for mechanical, electronic and software components at the concept design stage. The research objective of this dissertation work is to develop more effective systematic product design approaches for co-design of mechatronic products. Three innovative functional and object-oriented integrated design frameworks and one virtual prototyping application, which leverages on these three design frameworks, have been developed for co-design of mechatronic products. The three frameworks are: I) Hierarchical Object-Oriented Functional Modeling Framework, 2) Axiomatic Functional and Object-Oriented Product Design Framework, and 3) Integrated Function Structure and Object-Oriented Design Framework. These frameworks are utilized as the ground work for the construction of virtual prototypes. The technical objectives of this research include: 1. developing hierarchical object-oriented functional modeling framework to extend the previous function tree based functional design method; 2. developing the axiomatic functional and object-oriented product design framework to provide design guidance and to ensure preferred design based on the Independence Axiom; 3. developing the integrated function structure and object-oriented design framework to extend the previous function structure based functional design approach; 4. elaborating the developed frameworks by constructing a virtual prototype of an explosive ordinance disposal robot system"--Abstract, page iv.
