Anaerobic biodegradation of phenol: Bacterial acclimation and system performance

Abstract

Bacterial acclimation in anaerobic phenol-bearing wastewater treatment processes is very difficult in general. New acclimation methods were studied through four parallel experiments with different inoculam. The study reveals that the sludge from aerobic phenolbearing wastewater plants may be used for anaerobic processes directly, and that the sludge adaptive time is only one-fifth of the traditional method. An anaerobic suspended-growth process was tested in a dynamic batch feeding operation. The study indicates that the anaerobic treatment process for high-concentration phenol-bearing wastewater has the advantages of low construction cost and energy consumption, easy operation, and high phenol removal efficiency.
