Corrosion of RC Columns Repaired and Wrapped with CFRP Sheets

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how effectively CFRP sheet performs on inhibiting the corrosion process of steel reinforcements embedded in RC columns. a total of thirty small-scale RC columns were conditioned under the accelerated corrosion process, which was achieved by wet-dry cycles and imposing 6V of electric potential, and then tested under uni-axial compression up to failure. the test results revealed that although CFRP sheet wrapping decreased the corrosion rate, the corrosion of steel reinforcement continued to occur probably due to the entrapped moisture and moisture diffusion through CFRP sheet, resulting in the reduction of axial compression capacity. based on the small-scale RC column tests, design guidelines were proposed and the proposed design guidelines were validated through the comparison with the test results of four mid-scale RC columns. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
