Review of Cold-Formed Steel Purlin Design
Abstract
The use of cold-formed steel members as roof purlins for single story industrial and commercial buildings is commonly recognized. These members typically have either a C- or Z-shaped cross section. Although the strength requirements for purlin design are based on the AISI Specification, the assumptions that are commonly employed in the analysis and design of the members are not generally known. The intent of this paper will be to present the more common design and analysis assumptions used for cold-formed steel purlins; both C- and Z-shaped members will be discussed. Both gravity and uplift loading will be addressed.
