New Philosophy Guides Design of the Building Envelope
Abstract
Sometimes portrayed as a `non-structural' component, the building envelope has garnered attention through its newly acknowledged role in securing satisfactory building performance. If the building envelope fails, building contents may be exposed to the environment and pieces of glass may fall to the street below. Two considerations have become important to satisfactory building performance: the integrity of the building envelope and the post-breakage behavior of architectural glazing. A new philosophy of design assures that the building envelope will remain integral during windstorms and earthquakes, and is sensitive to consequences of glass breakage during these events and other envelope damaging incidents that may occur during the life of the building.
