Xanes Study of Fluctuation of Iron Valence in FeW₁₋ₓNbₓO₄ Solid Solutions
Abstract
K-absorption edge of iron in FeW1-xNbxxO4 with 0 < x < 1 solid solutions was measured with high resolution using synchrotron radiation. The edge and the white line are found to shift to higher energy with increasing Nb content due possibly to presence of Fe2+ and Fe3+. In addition, the white line develops a two peak structure with the second peak growing in intensity with increasing Nb content: a definite indication of valence fluctuation. After examining various interpretations, we conclude an IV state for iron as a consequence of configurational fluctuation in this series.
