Vectored Permeation Of Dyes In Plasma Polymers Of Methane
Abstract
Permeation of five acid dyes and a dispersion (nonionic) dye through composite films which consist of an ultra-thin layer, thickness approximately 7 to 20 nm, of plasma polymer of methane, prepared under varying levels of energy input for the glow discharge, deposited onto Nylon-6 films, was investigated. A remarkable degree of vectored permeation was observed, i.e., no permeation from the coated side but appreciable permeation from the uncoated side. Permeability characteristics of plasma polymers of methane may be represented by an extremely tight network and the presence of ionic sites. Vectored permeation was tentatively postulated on the basis of the change of the degree of ionization of permeating dye molecules and the interaction with ionic sites. © 1985.
